Josy Cardoso, a Nat Hab Expedition Leader in the Galapagos Islands, interviews Greg Aranea, a Galapagos oceanographer and naturalist guide, to discuss the role marine currents play in nurturing and sustaining biodiversity beneath the seas. Using the archipelago’s marine ecosystem as an example, our presenters reveal how shifting currents mingle and in the process create unique species. The Galapagos Islands, situated on the equator off Ecuador, are located where major ocean currents come together, mixing nutrient-rich cool waters from the south with warm waters from the north and a deep cold current from the west. This convergence combines flora and fauna from contrasting environments, giving rise to intriguing endemic species found nowhere else.
