Richard Ivan Jobs is a Professor of History at Pacific University in Oregon. His published research has won awards and has been supported by grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Commission, the French government, and many others. His scholarly interests have circled around the histories of youth and young people, popular culture, travel and tourism, mobility, integration, and transnationality.

In this program, Professor Jobs tells the story of backpacking in Europe in the decades following World War II, revealing that those young intrepid adventurers were doing more than just exploring for themselves. With each border crossing and each new friendship, they were quietly helping knit the continent back together.
