@Bikerfrode – Frode Thomassen
Welcome to my very first cycling film outside the Lillehammer area! This time I have taken the trip to beautiful Trondheim, and this is the first episode in my summer vacation series 2024. The trip starts at Storsand Gård og Camping, a traditional resort that has welcomed travelers for decades. The area around Storsand has been used as both a farm and a trading post all the way back to the 18th century, and today it is a popular place for camping, swimming and outdoor activities along the Trondheimsfjord.
???? The weather shows itself from its best side – sun, warmth and a real summer atmosphere. I cycle through green fields, small towns and quiet areas before approaching Trondheim city center. Along the way I pass both Malvik and Vikhammer, two places with roots dating back to the Iron Age. The name Malvik comes from the Old Norse “mál” (border) and “vík” (cove), and the area has long been an important hub between east and west. Vikhammer was previously known for its farms and fishing environment along the fjord, and today it is a popular residential area with great hiking opportunities.
????️ Trondheim – a city with over 1000 years of history
Trondheim was founded in the year 997 by Olav Tryggvason, and was Norway’s capital in the Middle Ages. The city has a rich history as a royal seat, trading city and religious center. Some highlights:
???? Nidaros Cathedral
Nidaros Cathedral is Norway’s national shrine and Northern Europe’s largest Gothic cathedral. It was built over the grave of Olav the Holy, and has been a pilgrimage destination for almost 1000 years. The cathedral is a masterpiece of stonemasonry, stained glass windows and historical details.
???? Gamle Bybro – “The Portal of Happiness”
The Bybro was built in 1681 after the great city fire, and is one of Trondheim’s most famous landmarks. The portal on the bridge has given it the nickname Lykkens Portal, and the view over the Nidelva and Bakklandet is iconic.
????️ Bakklandet
Bakklandet is Trondheim’s oldest district, known for its colorful wooden houses, cobblestone streets, and cozy cafes. The area was almost demolished in the 1970s, but was saved by the locals — today it is one of Norway’s most charming districts.
???? Nidelva
The river winds through the city and has been the lifeblood of trade, timber rafting, and industry for hundreds of years. Today, it is a popular subject for photographers and a beautiful view from the saddle of a bicycle.
???? Hurtigruten – Norway’s coastline at its most beautiful
When I get down to the Hurtigruten quay, I’m lucky enough to see the MS Nordkapp getting ready to depart. Hurtigruten has been transporting passengers, mail and goods along the entire Norwegian coast since 1893. From Trondheim you can travel:
- North to Bodø, Lofoten, Tromsø and Kirkenes
- South to Kristiansund, Ålesund and Bergen
Just as I’m about to cycle on, the whistle blows – and it turns out that the MS Vesterålen is on its way to the quay. Two Hurtigruten in one film is not an everyday occurrence! The MS Vesterålen is one of the most traditional ships in the fleet, named after the Vesterålen archipelago where Hurtigruten was founded.
????♂️ Further into Trondheim city centre
I cycle further into the city centre, stop at a beautiful bridge and take in the view over the Nidelva. The tour then goes through a green park by the Nidaros Cathedral, where I stop and chat for a bit.
In parts of the film I have chosen not to add music, so that you can hear real city life – traffic, voices and sounds from Trondheim city centre.
Finally I cycle over the City Bridge, through Bakklandet, and back towards the campsite. At the end you also get a little glimpse of our caravan.
???? What do you think? I want to hear from you!
I really appreciate everyone who watches my films.
Please leave a comment:
- Did you like this movie
- Have you been to Trondheim before
- What melody would you use for this movie
- Do you have any requests for music for future movies
- Or maybe tips for places I should cycle next time
Thank you for following me on my trips ????♂️❤️
