Man is by nature a tribal creature.

Initially we gathered in groups for company, security and for better opportunities to secure food. The problem with herding is that it creates its own momentum which makes it more difficult to go against the consensus. We have seen some of the adverse effects of herding recently in financial markets and no doubt there is much more to come.
