Today I’m leaving the East Fjords and continuing my solo Iceland motorcycle trip on my Royal Enfield Himalayan 411. I ride Iceland’s Ring Road, Route 1, heading north in strong crosswinds and rain, before turning onto challenging gravel roads through the highlands of East Iceland. After a rough off-road section, I hike into Stuðlagil Canyon, riding Road 923 and walking between massive basalt columns carved by glacial water. Back on the bike, I continue towards North Iceland and the Mývatn region, crossing volcanic landscapes, geothermal areas like Hverir and Námafjall, with steam rising from the ground and endless wind pushing me to my limits. This stretch of the Ring Road feels exposed, remote and relentless, a real test of solo motorcycle travel in Iceland.
