The Lofoten Islands lie in the far north of Norway, well above the Arctic Circle. In winter the sun barely rises for weeks, and the northern lights swirl green across the sky, reflected in the frozen bays. Snow falls on bright red fishermen's cabins called rorbuer, a tradition at least 1,000 years old. In summer the midnight sun never sets and the islands turn bright green, with jagged peaks rising straight out of emerald fjords. Hike Reinebringen above the village of Reine for one of Norway's most famous views, find white sand beaches and orcas hunting offshore, and see cod drying on wooden racks into stockfish, once traded across Europe. The Gulf Stream keeps it milder than you'd expect this far north.
