Madalena is the capital of the Pico Island of the Azores in Portugal. The city of Madalena was founded around 1480 but it grew after the municipality was established in 1723. Today the city has approximately 7,000 permanent citizens but during the summer months many Europeans and Americans reside for their holidays.
