On a narrow bay in the Lofoten Islands, inside the Arctic Circle, a cluster of red fishing cabins stands on wooden stilts above the water with jagged peaks rising 700 metres directly behind them.

Reine is a village of around 300 people on Moskenesoya, the southernmost inhabited island in the Lofoten chain. The red cabins called rorbuer — traditional Norwegian fishermen's quarters on stilts — have been here since the 18th century, when Reine was one of the most important cod fishing stations in northern Norway. The mountain Reinebringen rises 448 metres directly above the village and can be hiked in one to two hours.

Reine was voted the most beautiful village in Norway in 1977 — and nothing has displaced it since.

How to get there:
Fly to Leknes airport (67km north) with connections to Oslo. Or take the ferry from Bodo on the mainland — around 6 hours through some of the most dramatic island scenery in Europe. The island road connects the whole chain.

Best time: June–August (midnight sun) or January–March (northern lights and snow on the peaks).
