Reinebringen: Norway's secret Arctic summit — 1,978 stone steps to the most famous viewpoint in Lofoten, in 30 seconds.
LOCATION
A 448 m peak climbing straight above Reinefjorden, on Moskenesøya in the Lofoten archipelago, Arctic Norway. The ~2,000 stone "Sherpa steps" were built by Nepalese Sherpas, turning a once-dangerous scramble into a proper staircase.
GETTING THERE
- From Bodø: Torghatten Nord car ferry to Moskenes, then bus to Reine. Foot passengers ride free (NOK 65 to reserve a guaranteed spot), 3h 30m, several daily
- From Leknes Airport (LKN): Nordland bus to Reine, NOK 80 - NOK 120, 1h 10m, 5 daily
- From Svolvær: bus to Reine via Leknes, NOK 170 - NOK 240, 3h 33m, daily
WHAT IT COSTS
Hiking Reinebringen is free and the trail is open year-round (snow-free June - September). Official parking in Reine from NOK 50 per hour; the Djupfjord viewpoint lot is free but tiny — arrive early.
BEST VIEWS
The summit ridge itself: Reine, Hamnøya and Sakrisøya islands spread across Reinefjorden 448 m below — one of the most photographed panoramas in Norway.
MORE TO DO
Sea kayaking on Reinefjorden, the preserved fishing village of Nusfjord, and the white-sand Bunes Beach hike.
BEST TIME TO GO
June - September on weekdays; hike early morning or late evening to beat the peak-season crowds. Midnight sun: late May - mid July. Bring waterproofs — Arctic weather changes fast.
