One of the most notorious regions for rogue waves is the southern coast of South Africa where the five-knot west-going Agulhas Current meets strong westerlies from the Southern Ocean.

Agulhas Current, surface oceanic current that forms the western boundary current of the southern Indian Ocean. It flows southward along the southeast coast of Mozambique and the coast of South Africa before turning eastward to join the flow from Africa to Australia. A small part of Agulhas water apparently continues westward around the Cape of Good Hope into the Atlantic Ocean. The Mozambique Current, between Madagascar and Africa, also feeds the Agulhas Current.

The most famous case of a ship being lost off that coast was the S.S. Waratah, a 150-m long cargo liner steamship. On 26th July 1909 the Waratah left Durban on her way to Cape Town with 211 people on board. She was last spotted 180 miles from Durban and, to this day, no trace has ever been recovered.

Over the last few decades, more than 50 large ships have been severely damaged by gigantic waves in that area.

Sailing on smaller ships poses more dangers as you will witness in the video. The freeboard is less & the chances of water ingress are more. This demands for more vigilance & safety as even a small mistake can lead to huge damages of life, cargo & environment.

Merchant Navy poses great risks and dangers at all times, therefore is a well paid job.
