David Bromstad Lost Everything Behind the Smile: The Truth About His Dream Home

Description
David Bromstad has spent almost two decades making other people’s dream homes come true on HGTV. But his own dream home became the backdrop for the hardest chapter of his life.

In this documentary-style video, we trace his journey from a bullied, art-obsessed kid in Cokato, Minnesota, to winning HGTV’s Design Star in 2006 and hosting My Lottery Dream Home. We then look at the Florida storm that wrecked his renovation, the pressure that followed, his decision to enter treatment, and the sobriety he announced on his fiftieth birthday. We also cover his climb up Reinebringen in Norway, the December 2025 special David’s Happy Ending, and why he says he is stepping back from designing on camera.

It is a story about the cost of the bright, cheerful persona, and about the courage it takes to put it down.
